  5. Windows 10 End of Life in October 2025 (What You Need to Know and How We Can Help)

With Microsoft officially ending support for Windows 10 in October 2025, millions of users need to prepare for this critical transition. The end of Windows 10 means no more security updates, bug fixes, or technical support, making your system vulnerable to threats.

Why you need to upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11

Remaining on Windows 10 after its end of life will expose you to risks. Without regular security updates, your computer will over time become vulnerable to malware, viruses, and other security threats. Additionally, you may experience compatibility issues with new software and peripherals. Upgrading to Windows 11 ensures you have the latest security protections, enhanced features, and ongoing support from Microsoft.

Windows 11 offers enhanced security features that protect your data from the moment you turn on your device. It also introduces productivity tools like Snap Layouts, Desktops, and built-in Microsoft Teams, designed to help you work more efficiently. Most of this will be of little interest to the average user, so it’s enough to know that Windows 11 builds on the platform of Windows 10, is visually very similar, has some very helpful improvements including improved Windows Defender protection, improved Windows Explorer and file management and is generally more stable and less likely to crash.

If you are a happy user of Windows 10, you aren’t going to find Windows 11 any more difficult to use. However, if you would like some help, your local approved Computer Repair Man technician can set it up exactly how you like it and help you become familiar with Windows 11.

What are your options?

1. Upgrade to Windows 11

Upgrading to Windows 11 is the best way to stay secure and benefit from the latest technology. Here’s how to get started:

Use Microsoft’s PC Health Check tool to see if your computer meets the system requirements for Windows 11.

To be compatible with Windows 11, your PC or laptop will need a motherboard with a UEFI BIOS (supporting Secure Boot), an 8th generation (or higher) Intel CPU or a 2nd generation AMD Ryzen (or higher) CPU, with Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0. TPM is usually a feature of the CPU but it may be possible to install a dedicated TPM card in your PC if your motherboard supports this.

Many PCs and laptops from circa 2018 onwards will be compatible with Windows 11 & therefore be eligible for a free upgrade from Microsoft. This can be installed via Windows Update (Settings > Windows Update) and will appear as an option if your computer is eligible.

Please keep in mind that although your computer may be eligible for a Windows 11 upgrade, it still may not be suitable for one! In our experience, laptops & PCs where the main C: drive is a mechanical hard drive and/or computers with less than 8GB RAM are likely to be slow and sluggish when running Windows 11. That said, it will already be slow and sluggish on Windows 10!

Your local approved Computer Repair Man technician can advise on the suitable way forward and assist with hardware upgrades & install Windows 11 for you.

2. Stick with Windows 10

While upgrading is highly recommended, some users may be perfectly happy with their Windows 10 PC or laptop and will have no desire to upgrade or replace it. Sure, your Windows 10 computer is not going to stop working overnight and may remain perfectly suitable for many users, it is important to understand that over time, your computer may become more susceptible to security vulnerabilities and cyberattacks.

Those using their computer for business purposes, storing (or with acess to) customer data,  may be in breach of UK GDPR regulations once support for Windows 10 has ended.

What can you do if your PC or laptop computer is incompatible with Windows 11?

If your current PC doesn’t meet the requirements for Windows 11, your options include

  • Upgrade your PC Hardware

If you have a PC that is not compatible with Windows 11, it may be possible to replace your motherboard, processor or add a TPM module so that it becomes compatible with Windows 11. Please note that these options are not applicable to laptops, where the motherboard and CPU are not upgradable.

  • Buy a New PC or Laptop

If upgrading isn’t practical, economical or simply not advisable, then investing in a new PC with Windows 11 pre-installed will be the best solution. Your local approved Computer Repair Man technician can provide the perfect custom built PC for you, accompanied by a fantastic warranty and ongoing local & personal support from your local technican.

If you are looking for a laptop rather than a PC, or you would prefer to buy a computer from a large retailer, your local approved technician will be able to advise on an appropriate computer specification for you so that you can confidently buy one from a retail store without being bamboozled by sales staff (potentially taking home something unsuitable,  accompanied by a bundle of unneccessary and expensive software products). Many approved Computer Repair Man technicians can also supply refurbished or reconditioned computers at a lower price than the cost of a new one.

Whichever option you choose, your local approved Computer Repair Man technician can assist with setting up your new computer exactly how you like it, transferring across your personal files and data, setting up email accounts and reinstalling your preferred software applications such as Microsoft Office/Microsoft 365 and appropriate security / antivirus solutions.
